Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born January 16,1979 in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York to Michael and Diane Haughton. As a child Aaliyah always would sing the songs she would hear. At age 5 her family moved to Detroit to be closer to family. Then at age 11 she landed a spot on star search singing "My Funny Valentine", but Aaliyah lost. At the age of 13 Aaliyah's uncle signed her to his label Blackround Records. Aaliyah's first CD Age Ain't Nothing But A Number, which was released when she was just 14 was written and produced by R.Kelly.

Aaliyah later left R.Kelly after rumors of them being married. Aaliyah denies ever being married and R.Kelly won't comment. Aaliyah got Missy and Timbaland to produce her second album One In A Million. Some of the biggest hits were If Your Girl Only Knew, One In A Million, Hot Like Fire, and 4 Page Letter. In 1998 Aaliyah did a song for the soundtrack Anastasia called Journey to the Past. She had another #1 hit with Are You That Somebody from the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack. Aaliyah took a break from music and did some acting, she starred in the movie Romeo Must Die. Showing off her skills Aaliyah was the executive producer of the film's soundtrack and contributed some songs to the sountrack including Try Again.
The Aftermath
Aaliyah's funeral was held on Friday, August 31st, 2001 in New York City. Her mother Diana released 22 doves into the air one for each year. Police estimated that 1,000 fans were there.
Six months after Aaliyah died Queen Of The Damned opened at movie theaters everywhere on Febrary 22, 2002 debuting at #1 in the box office. Queen Of The Damned brought in over million it's opening weekend.

After her work in Romeo Must Die Aaliyah was signed up for the Matrix II and III. First she went to Melbourne, Australia to shoot the Anne Rice novel Queen Of The Damned. On her time off from shooting the movie she got back into the studio and recorded her 3rd album AALIYAH. When AALIYAH was finally released the album debuted at #2. The videos she shoot for her last album were We Need A Resolution, More Than A Woman, and Rock The Boat. After Shooting Rock The Boat Aaliyah and her crew boarded the plane but shortly after at 6:50pm the plane crashed killing 6 people instantly. The other 3 aboard later died. The 8 Others who were killed with Aaliyah were: Gina Smith,29 Aaliyah's product manager at Blackground Records; Blackground Records own Keith Wallace, 49; Douglas Kratz, 28, Virgin Records' director of video production; her bodyguard Scott Gallin, 41; Aaliyah's personal hair stylist Eric Forman, 29; hair stylist Anthony Dodd, 34; and makeup artist Christopher Maldonado, 32; as well as the plane's pilot, identified only as L. Maradel.
